Project: Modernism and Vanguard Poetry

Poetry reveals feelings and arouses emotions. It is the voice of the soul that enchants and gives life to fantasy. There are many different definitions for this literary language, and there are numerous advantages to working with it in the classroom.
However, using poetry with 12th grade students can seem complicated. The teacher needs to find the ideal measure of sensibility to get students interested in the subject. But for students at the ETEC Monsenhor Antonio Magliano School in Garça, the interior of Sao Paulo, their encounter with modernist, vanguard poetry proved to be an unforgettable experience.
Their teacher Mariza Passos came up with the idea after perceiving the need to work with poetry to prepare students for ENEM (high school scholastic exams) and college entrance examinations. Mariza divided the class into groups. Using the Aprende Brasil portal students did research about important authors in the Portuguese language from different phases of literature.
Once the research was done, with great enthusiasm, the class set up slide presentations. Using the page builder on the portal, the next step was to create a home page about the author studied.
According to Marisa, using the Portal in class generated a lot of interest among the teams.
The creativity of the materials presented was a pleasant surprise for the whole school. For the teacher, the result of the work left everyone with a feeling of great accomplishment, especially because it awakened the students’ interest in literature. But more than that, this encounter with poetry shows that it is possible to dream while you discuss society. It is a sensitive way of building ethical principles. It is fantasy transforming reality into something better.
